What Are the Consequences of Inadequate Supervision?

Registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and certified nursing assistants (CNAs) make up the majority of the staff at nursing homes. Most nursing homes have only enough RNs on staff to meet regulations. They may spend most of their time doing paperwork rather than caring for patients or supervising LPNs and CNAs.

In most cases, CNAs perform more direct patient care than RNs or LPNs. Unfortunately, CNAs are not highly trained or given sufficient health and patient care education. Because they do demanding jobs for low pay, turnover in CNA positions is high. When inadequate staff supervision is combined with a poorly trained staff, the result is often injury to the residents.

Inadequate supervision can be connected to negligent care causing injuries and illnesses such as bedsores, broken hips, and dehydration and malnutrition. In addition, ambulatory residents may be injured by being allowed to wander off.

An unsupervised staff may also be more likely to abuse nursing home residents physically, emotionally, mentally or sexually.
