Springfield Texting While Driving Accident

Why Is Texting While Driving So Dangerous?

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, more than 1,000 collisions are caused by distracted drivers annually. Texting takes eyes off of the road and hands off the wheel, reducing the reaction time of drivers under 24 years of age by 35 percent. It only takes a second to cause a serious auto accident injury.

We want to help reduce crashes and save lives. Kanoski Bresney joined forces with the Illinois State Police and FOX-TV in a safe driving campaign to help teen drivers and parents learn about the dangers of talking or texting while driving. We urge parents to talk to their teen drivers about the dangers of distracted driving.

Illinois Texting and Driving Laws

The state legislature is aware of how dangerous it can be to use a cellphone or other electronic devices while driving. As recently as 2009, laws prohibited sending, reading or composing text messages while driving, as well as sending or receiving instant messages or email. And, effective January 1, 2014, Illinois banned the use of cellphones while driving without the use of a hands-free device. We support these laws and the effort to make our roadways safer. However, people will still act negligently when driving and when they do, we are ready to hold them accountable.
