SUV Crashes Into Camp Building, Kills 4 and Hurt 6 Children

Posted on May 07, 2025 in Car Accidents

IL injury lawyerA YNOT After School Camp building in Chatham was the scene of a tragedy on April 28th, 2025. Several children and workers were in the gym when a Jeep drove through the building, striking and killing three children and one teen worker. Six more were hospitalized due to injuries. The Jeep had left the road and crossed a field, a street, and a parking lot before traveling through the gym. After exiting the building, the Jeep crossed a basketball court before hitting a pole and finally stopping. An investigation is ongoing, trying to determine the cause of the series of events. Our hearts go out to all the families involved.

One news story mentioned that drivers must report a medical condition that could cause loss of ability or consciousness that would make driving unsafe, although it is unclear whether the Jeep’s driver has such a condition. Driver negligence can take many forms. Unfortunately, that negligence often causes injuries and fatalities. If you are harmed by or lose a loved one due to a car accident caused by negligent driving, our skilled Peoria, IL personal injury attorneys can fight to help you collect the compensation you deserve.

What Is Negligent Driving?

Everyone who operates a motor vehicle has a legal duty to drive safely, taking care to keep from harming others. Failing to uphold that duty is considered negligent and could provide the grounds you need to file a personal injury or wrongful death claim. Sadly, approximately 94 percent of all crashes happen because of negligent driver errors, meaning they probably could have been prevented. Common forms of careless driving mistakes include:

  • Speeding or driving too fast for conditions
  • Following too closely
  • Failing to yield the right of way
  • Driving while impaired by fatigue, drugs, or alcohol
  • Distracted driving
  • Running stop signs or red lights

Other types of negligence can also contribute to accidents. Knowingly driving an unsafe car, like one with a cracked windshield or bald tires, is negligent. Driving with certain medical conditions may also constitute negligence.

Why Do I Need a Lawyer for a Car Accident, Personal Injury, or Wrongful Death Claim?

You cannot simply blame someone else for causing the accident and expect to receive a settlement. You need evidence that clearly proves the crash was another party’s fault, that the injuries or death resulted from the collision, and that the damages you are claiming stemmed from the accident. That requires a thorough investigation.

Next, you need to understand what damages you are eligible to receive and be able to place an accurate value on each. Damages are specific losses, such as medical expenses, property damage, lost income, and pain and suffering. Wrongful death claims may provide additional damages. The liable insurance company still is not just going to hand over a fair amount of money. You almost always have to fight to obtain a reasonable sum that covers your damages.

With a competent lawyer on your side, you do not have to worry about conducting an investigation or fighting with insurers. We will handle every aspect of your case on your behalf, working hard to maximize your compensation.
